The Sesheke Saga
The expected outcome of the correct application of 1 Peter 5:2 and 2 Timothy 2:2.
When a young person who is just hearing God’s call to become a Pastor-Teacher or missionary teacher, first reads 1 Peter 5:2, “Feed the flock of God which is among you…”, the natural questions are “Who is my flock?” and “How do I feed them?” Through study, the answer is found: feed people what they need so they can obey the mandate “Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” It is vital to teach a congregation how to make rapid progress towards maturity in the Christian way of life.
Then, the aspiring P-T reads 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also,” and this adds a whole new dimension to the teacher’s career. It is one thing to teach a subject to people, it adds another layer of complexity to the job to be required to train them to be teachers themselves.
Pastor Chester McCalley wrote “The Christian who does not understand what God has done in the past, and who does not have faith in what God will do in the future, will be overwhelmed by today's crisis.” Chester also wrote, in his message The Fed and the Feeder, “Just because you’re standing in the pulpit talking doesn’t mean that people are being fed.” He urged pastors not to teach their exegetical notes to a congregation, but to develop expository (verse by verse) lessons that are “digestible” by all the believers.
